1973年のアルバム「Piano man」のトラック２。アルバムリリース後、シングルカットされ1973年11月2日リリース。ビリー・ジョエルを一躍有名歌手にしたこの曲だが、正確には５thアルバム「ストレンジャー」の大ヒット、グラミー受賞を経て、過去作品を再評価される形で人気となった曲である。

この曲は主人公「ビリー・ジョエル」の視点から、ピアノ奏者としてバーで出会った人々についての回想を歌にしている。1972年〜1973年にかけて、ロサンゼルスでラウンジミュージシャンとして活動していたジョエルの実体験に基づいている。
1971年リリースのソロデビューアルバム「Cold Spring Harbor」の商業的失敗から、ジョエルは契約しているニューヨークのレコード会社からの離脱を考えていたという。そんな彼の精神的不安や野望が繊細に見え隠れする名曲である。バーテンダーの「ジョン」や不動産小説家の「ポール」などは、すべて実在のモデルが存在する。
